I love burgers, especially during the summer months when I am grilling every chance I get. However I do not always want to take the time to make homemade keto hamburger buns, keto bread or even eat keto bread in general. So I use lettuce in place of the bun and it is the perfect solution!
I also grew up with my dad who made the most flavorful homemade burgers, I am still picky about my burgers. I am picky and it must be a delicious burger or I am not going to keep eating them. With a few simple ingredients (that are all low carb) these keto burgers are full of flavor even before you add any toppings.

What is the Best Lettuce for Wrapped Burgers
I am using Boston bib lettuce. I think it is the best choice because it has the right shape and firmness and wraps the best. Although it isn’t the only one that you can use. You can also use iceberg lettuce or romaine. Both of these really work well.
Can I Use a Different Meat in the Burgers
Ground beef makes the best burgers when you are talking about a classic, but you can use other flavor if you like. You can use ground pork, ground chicken or ground turkey. You want to make sure you are using a meat that has enough fat in it or else you keto burgers are going to taste dry and without flavor. Plus on the Keto diet, you need to make sure you are getting enough fat in your meals.
Can I make these on the grill?
Yes! If you are a grill lover like myself and would prefer to make grilled keto burgers you totally can! Just make your burger patties and then cook them over medium heat on the grill. Depending on the rareness you like will depend on how long you cook them for.
Grilling Times for Burgers
These cook times are based on cooking 1 inch thick burgers on a grill. To measure doneness you want to check the internal temperature with a meat thermometer.
- Rare Burger: 125°F – 4 minutes of cook time.
- Medium Rare Burger: 135°F – 5 minutes of cook time.
- Medium Burgers: 145°F – 6-7 minutes of cook time.
- Well Done Burger: 160°F – 7-8 minutes of cook time.

You can make a double, triple or even bigger batch of these burgers if you want to. If you have any leftovers they need to be stored in the fridge.
Can I freeze Keto hamburgers?
Yes! In fact I like to make a large batch of the burgers and then freeze them so when I am making a quick dinner of burgers and hot dogs I can just grab them out and let them defrost. Then all I have to do is cook them.
How to Freeze premade hamburgers
After making the hamburger patty meat mixture shape the meat into burgers. Wrap each burger with plastic wrap and then place the burgers on a baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the freezer and freeze hamburger patties for 1 hour. Remove the frozen burger patties and store them in a freezer zip close bag.
You can freeze cooked burger patties the same way and they will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Tips for making Low Carb hamburgers
Use a burger press. You can shape the burgers with your hands, but I find it much easier to use a burger press. This makes the beef patties all the same size and shape which makes for easier cooking.
Watch your toppings. Because you are going to put the keto burger toppings that you love on top of these burgers be sure to keep track of the carb counts for them.
Pay attention when cooking. Whether you are using the grill or a pan on the stove you can quickly over cook a burger patty. To be sure that you are cooking them to the doneness you prefer be sure to keep an eye on them when they are cooking.
