Homemade Butter Recipe
Homemade butter is one of the easiest things to make and it tastes so much better than store-bought! I have been making my own butter for years. What started out as mason jar butter and a fun activity to do with the kids turned into something that is a staple in our household. While you can totally make this butter in a mason jar like i have done with the kids, I find it easier and faster to make it in a stand mixer when making my own butter.
Once you start making your own butter, you’ll never want to go back to the store-bought stuff. It’s really simple – all you need is cream and a little bit of patience. You can make salted butter or unsalted butter with the same simple steps. The whole process of making butter in a stand mixer takes under 15 minutes.
The best part about homemade butter is that you can customize it however you want and make compound butter with homemade butter if you want to. Add in some herbs or spices for a new flavor profile, or keep it classic with just salt. Experiment until you find the perfect recipe for your palate.

Is store-bought butter Keto?
Most store-bought butters are high in fat and low in carbs, making them Keto-friendly. However, some brands may add in additional sugars or other ingredients that could affect the carb count. Be sure to check the label before purchasing to be sure that the butter you are buying is Keto-friendly. Personally I just like the way that homemade butter tastes.
Is homemade butter Keto?

What is the best way to make butter?
We make butter one of two ways. Sometimes when I am short on time and in a hurry, I will make homemade butter using a stand mixer. This whips the keto butter up in no time. However, when we have more time and I want to get the kids involved, I add the ingredients together in a mason jar and let the kids shake. They all take turns shaking the jar and making their own homemade butter.
How long is homemade butter good for?
Homemade butter will last for about 7 to 10 days when stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If you like to leave the butter out at room temperature, then it will last 3 to 5 days.
Why does homemade butter taste different?
Homemade butter has a richer, creamier flavor than store-bought because it is made with fresher ingredients. When you make your own butter, you can also control the amount of salt that is added. This allows you to customize the flavor to your liking.
Why is my homemade butter crumbly?
If your homemade butter is crumbly, it likely means that it was over-churned. When making butter, you want to stop just before the point of separation. If you continue to churn after the butter has separated from the buttermilk, it will become crumbly.
How do I fix crumbly butter?
If your butter is crumbly, you can try to re-churn it with a little bit of buttermilk. This will help to bind the butter together and make it more smooth. You can also add in a little bit of salt to help with this as well.
Can I make this with a hand mixer?
I like using my stand mixer because it makes my life easier but you can make homemade butter with a hand mixer. All you need is a large mixing bowl and your hand mixer and just follow the rest of the directions.
Tips for making homemade butter
Use plastic wrap. If you do not want to get your hands oily when shaping the butter you can put it into plastic wrap and shape it.
Shap the butter how you want to. You can make a ball of butter or you can make a butter log. You can also just dump the butter into a glass jar or container and not shape it.
Only use a little bit of salt. When you are making homemade butter you do not need a lot of salt if you are making salted butter. Just a pinch will be enough.
Use the splash guard. You may want to use the splash guard for your stand mixer to keep the mess to a minimum and avoid any heavy cream splashing out of the mixer.
How much butter will this recipe make?
This recipe will make 1 pound of butter. 1 pound of butter is 32 tablespoons of butter.
Homemade Butter with a Stand Mixer Ingredients and supplies
- 1 quart of heavy cream
- Stand mixer with large bowl and whisk attachment
- pinch of Salt (if making salted butter)
How to Make Homemade Butter Using a Stand Mixer
Pour the heavy whipping cream into your electric mixer bowl and add salt if you are making salted butter. Then the mixer on to medium speed.
Let the mixer churn the heavy cream into butter.
You will see the butter go thru the different stages from the heavy cream going to whipped cream stage and having stiff peaks to when the cream separates and then a solid mass of butter forming.
Once you have a solid butter in the bowl of your stand mixer remove the butter solids and place them in a small bowl until you have all of the butter chunks out. Leave the buttermilk in the bottom of the mixer bowl.
Pour a VERY small amount of cold water on top of it and shape your butter or you can use plastic wrap. If you are using plastic wrap you will want to place the butter onto the plastic wrap and then wrap the butter and shape it while it is wrapped. You can shape it into a ball or a roll, the preference is yours.
You will also have buttermilk at the bottom of the bowl. You can keep or discard the buttermilk.
